Define evaluation:
Evaluation is the collection of all of the previous information and assigning a mark based on that.
Define assessment:
Assessment can be for, as, or of learning and it is designed with feedback to allow the students to know what they need to work on and where they are headed. Assessment should be directly connected to the learning objectives and should involve the students.
What is criterion-referenced assessment?
Give examples.
Criterion-referenced assessment focuses on what the students should be able to do. It is not dependent on how well other students do, and all students can do well.
What is norm-referenced assessment?
Give examples.
Norm-referenced assessment is looking at students
What are some of the different reasons that teachers assess students work?
a. Transfer and retention
b. Self-assessment
c. Evaluate instructional effectiveness
d. Motivation
What are the five steps (considerations) to planning performance assessment?
1. Specifying the performance outcomes.
2. Selecting the focus of the assessment.
3. Selecting an appropriate degree of realism.
4. Selecting the performance situations.
5. Selecting the method of observing, recording and scoring.

What is an analytical rubric? When would you use it?
An analytic rubric looks at each component of an assignment or project individually and assigns a mark for that component.
What is a holistic rubric? When would you use it?
A holistic rubric looks at the overall quality or impression of a performance or product rather than considering the individual elements. It should be used when products are difficult to define. Ex: Art, creative writing
What is the difference between and analytic and a holistic rubric?
An analytic rubric looks at specific components individually where a holistic rubric looks at the overall performance or product. When using both, the holistic should always be done first so that one component does not distort the holistic impression.
What are some considerations for involving students in communicating about their achievement?
– involve students in a way that they feel comfortable
– make sure that the student is able to understand the feedback and be open to explaining it
– know that feedback can help with motivation, but it can also shut a student down if they feel like there is no chance for success
What are some of the ‘do’s and don’ts’ pertaining to conferences with parents?
What is outcome based reporting? What are some of its features?
– outcome based reporting is when instead of assigning overall grades, you assign meeting, exceeding, needs improvement, etc… to each outcome for the students. This allows parents and students to see exactly where they need to focus and overall how their student is doing.
What are the features of traditional performance assessment vs. expanded performance assessments?
traditional – tasks
expanded – projects
What are the two different types of portfolios? What are the benefits of using portfolios in the classroom?
Developmental and showcase
– shows actual sample of students work
– provides comparisons in different areas and growth over time
– provides students with an opportunity to evaluate and reflect on their own work
– provides evidence of learning to all involved
– increased participation for students in the learning process
What are the purposes and features of a showcase portfolio and how would you use it?
– displays the students best work
– used at the end of instruction to show what the student can do
What are the purposes and features of a developmental portfolio and how would you use it?
– shows the learning process
– used during instruction and practice
What is involved in effective communication about student learning with parents?
– open contact: being available in a timely manner when parents have questions
– understanding that the parent is the expert on their child, working with them is helpful
– stay in contact
– if you are updating grades into a database stay on top of it
– be willing to listen to parents and understand their concerns – is 1 or 2 percent worth fighting over?
What is the difference between restricted and extended performance tasks?
Restricted are very limited in scope. Ex: write a one page report on the field trip.
Extended are less structured and broader in scope.
Ex: Design and construct an experiment.
What are the 6 guidelines for effective and fair grading?
1. Inform students at the beginning of instruction what grading procedures will be used.
2. Base grades on student achievement, and achievement only!
3. Base grades on a wide variety of valid assessment data.
4. When combining scores for grading use a proper weighting technique.
5. Select an appropriate frame of reference for grading.
6. Review borderline cases by reexamining all achievement evidence.

What is validity?
Making sure that you are testing the intended outcomes. The test can be linked directly back to what is intended to be tested.
What is reliability?
That the test would have the same results over time with different students.
What is norm-referenced?
– compares students to each other and ranks them that way
What is criterion-referenced?
– compares only what the students can do. It is objective based and has nothing to do with how others perform.
What is the number one purpose of assessment?
