Modification
Driven by the students IEP. Alters the instructional level and performance criteria, changing what the individual student is supposed to learn.
Inclusion
Giving all students the opportunity to learn in the general education classroom.
GT
Gifted and talented Students without a learning disability who have special learning needs.
RTI
Response to intervention.
Alternative approach to determining eligibility for special education related services.
Tier 1 = high quality support for all children.
Tier 2 = more intensive small group instruction.
Tier 3 = more individualized attention but not yet special education.
IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
All individuals with disabilities will receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
Accommodation
Making an extra effort for a student without changing the curriculum.
Differentiate
Individualized instruction for diverse learners.
Assimilate
Forced to give up home language and culture in order to adopt a new one.
Acculturate
Maintaining own language while learning a new one.
ESL
Teaching the oral and written skills of English.
Bilingual
Teaching subjects in the home language alongside English.
At Risk
Students who are at risk of dropping out due to educational disadvantages, low SES, or underachievement.
